United Nations Women’s IT Employment in Dhaka

January 2021 - March 2021

With this project my team and I placed top 10 out of ~150 projects in the United Nations Hackathon in increasing women's employment in the IT sector. The reccomendation we developed was sent to the United Nations for consideration.

In this project, my team and I participated in a United Nations hackathon with the theme of increasing women’s employment in the IT sector in the world.

We did a root cause analysis on the reasons women are not employed as much as men in the IT sector, and narrowed down Dhaka, Bangladesh to be a good starting point for our project as it was a rapidly developing city with a quickly growing IT sector, but also great inequality. As a part of our root cause anaylsis we realized that women were not able to get proper IT education because they did not have enough time to educate themselves because looking after children were culturally assigned to them. For our solution we designed a United Nations IT education center with an attached daycare to provide education while the children are being looked after. Our strategy involved expanding to the city of Chittagong after Dhaka as it was another city with a similar environment.

We projected to impact ~38,000 women in Dhaka by 2026 and ~ 10,000 women in Chittagong by 2026.
